Congratulations to Melanie Scott, MD, PhD. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism of the National Institutes of Health recently awarded a new grant to Dr. Scott for the new project, “The Role of Matrix-Bound Microvesicles in Alcohol-Related Liver Disease".

On 9 May 2023, the Department of Surgery held the Inaugural Health Equity Coalition Summit at The Homewood Community Engagement Center. The engagement was intended to inspire our community advocates, residents and faculty to see the overwhelming positive benefits that come with collaborating with community partners to build health equity. Our speakers highlighted specific examples of such collaborations with UPMC and the Neighborhood Resilience Project, the Community Collaborative for Special Populations, and Primary Health Services. A new sub-award for research to be conducted by Roberto Mota Alvidrez, MD, has been approved for funding.
Dr. Mota is the principal investigator (PI) on the project, “Role of Cytosolic Phospholipase A2 in vascular wall lipid accumulation in atherosclerosis” which will be funded by the University of California, San Diego Future Faculty of Cardiovascular Sciences (FOCUS) program.
